Waimangu Volcanic Valley was forced out of a cataclysmic volcanic eruption giving birth to the world’s newest geothermal area, and is a living testament to the power of nature over man.
Today, on the Waimangu Round Trip, you can learn the stories of the 1886 Tarawera Eruption and explore Rotorua’s natural history.
The Lake Rotomahana Boat Cruise takes you close to steaming cliffs, gushing hot springs and across the sites of the destroyed Pink and White Terraces. Rotomahana is a wildlife sanctuary, home to many species of native and exotic birds.
Walk across the uninhabited Te Ariki Isthmus, the scene of a year-long land war between Maori in the 1850’s and where many perished during the 1886 eruption. On your boat cruise across beautiful Lake Tarawera your skipper will entertain you with the facts and legends surrounding the Eruption and the Pink and White Terraces. Then visit the prehistoric Maori rock paintings at Tarawera Landing where your tour ends.
