Enjoy a relaxing 45 minutes cruise on Lake Rotomahana, with full commentary from your skipper. Accessible only through New Zealand's Waimangu Volcanic Valley, this lake is a completely separate geothermal system featuring hot springs, geysers, fumeroles and steaming cliffs that can only be seen from the boat cruise.
As you relax into your cruise over Lake Rotomahana take a moment to think about how this beautiful body of water was formed. Covering approximately 15 coalescing craters Rotomahana was born out of the devastation of the mighty 1886 Tarawera Eruption. Fifteen years after the eruption Rotomahana had reached its current height and can now lay claim to the title of deepest lake in the North Island and newest of all New Zealand's larger, naturally formed lakes.
The unspoilt beauty of this tranquil lake and its surroundings are protected from development, and its future is secure. It will remain one of New Zealand's beautiful, natural wilderness areas and a wildlife refuge where the large numbers of birds, both native and exotic, that you will have seen and heard during your cruise, live all year round. Our vessel will take you into a beautiful semi enclosed volcanic crater, and out in the middle of Lake Rotomahan you'll see Patiti Island, currently being restored by Waimangu Volcanic Valley Ltd to a predator-free state and an eventual sanctuary for endangered New Zealand native birds.
