About Hell's Gate
For more than 700 years, Rotorua Maori have lived on this special site, treasured by Maori as a place of healing and revitalisation.
At New Zealand's only Maori owned thermal park, follow the footsteps of warriors of old, through the swirling clouds of steam, past the pool where the Maori Princess "Hurutini" lost her life for her people. See the geothermal activity of the Inferno, the Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, warriors would bathe in the sulphurous waters to heal their wounds after battle and remove the "tapu" (sacredness) of war.
The special muds and sulphurous waters have been guarded for centuries by Kaitiaki, 'Wai Ora' (guardian warrior) after whom the spa is named.

Wai Ora Spas, Mud Bath, and Sulphur Spas
"Wai Ora", a Maori term which means "healing waters", our highly regarded massage therapies are based on the historical Mirimiri healing practices of local Maori people, a historic cultural spa experience that dates back more than 700 years. Wai Ora heals physically, mentally and spiritually. Our luxurious therapies use the famous, mineral rich geothermal muds of Rotorua.
The special muds and sulphurous waters have been guarded for centuries by the Kaitiaki (guardian warrior) after whom the spa is named. Additional properties of Hell's Gate muds include:
- Very strong affinity to moisture in the skin making it an excellent product for promoting regenerating skin cells
- Detoxifying and purifying action of the mud on the skin when drying
- Highly active clay surfaces of the mud that easily absorbs excess oils and fatty secretions from within the skin's pores
- Bacteriacidal properties of the mud through its sulphur content which kill bacteria and assists in the prevention and elimination of acne.
