You might have a bucket list of places and sights you would like to capture, or a theme you would like to follow. Maybe you want to explore old buildings and the gold mining heritage of Queenstown and Central Otago, check out New Zealand's wine region, capture amazing vistas from the highest points, or get in close to a wild river or a mossy beech forest. Of course, you could always leave the itinerary up to your guide. He'll know where to find views to take your breath away.
From the high vantage point, choose to head out of Queenstown in one of five directions based on your preferences. Head west toward Glenorchy, Paradise and Kinloch to see waterfalls, Lake Wakatipu, Moke Lake, the Dart and Rees rivers. Learn about gold mining, transport, and farming history. Much of the Lord of the Rings films was filmed in this region. Heading east will take you toward Arrowtown, the Crown Range, Gibbston Valley, and Cromwell where you'll find heritage, vineyards, expansive views, the rugged Kawarau Gorge, and gold mining. Choose to go up in altitude toward Coronet Peak and Skippers Canyon and you'll explore gold mining heritage, expansive views, alpine tussock landscapes, and the craggy, rugged Skippers Canyon road. Moving south takes you through Kingston. A spectacular drive along Lake Wakatipu and the base of the Remarkables Range, take in vistas of mountains, waterfalls, and the old steam train. Then drive up a steep climb to wild alpine tussock and rock country. Travel north instead, over the Crown Range toward Wanaka and you'll encounter expansive mountain and valley vistas, and traverse the highest road pass in New Zealand. Find gold mining heritage, glaciated landscapes, and views of Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring, and the Southern Alps.
Whichever direction you choose, your guide will take you to his favorite spots for capturing the splendor and magnificence. You will be mentored on how to find great shots, and learn about creative composition and exposure to help you capture the majesty and beauty. Coffee, tea and cookies are available on-board for when you are peckish, and there will be a stop so you can buy lunch in a quaint local village. You can expect 30-45 minutes for lunch.
