Hear the legends and view the natural wonders that eclipse this untouched landscape of the Far North. Journey to the far north of New Zealand, explore the history and uncover the legends of this diverse and dramatic landscape.
Our day begins with a short board walk through the magnificent Puketi Kauri Forest, a 15,000 hectare forest, rich ecological diversity including species of plants found nowhere else in the world. We take a short break in picturesque seaside community of Mangonui for a bite to eat before climbing north to Cape Reinga.
The craggy windswept headland of Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) rises steeply to 290 m above sea level. According to Maori legend it is the departing place of souls on their journey to the homeland, Hawaiki. Legend tells of a spirit trail along Ninety Mile Beach on the west coast. Starting at the southern end of the beach, the departing spirit waits for an outgoing tide before journeying back to Hawaiki.
The famous lighthouse at Cape Reinga, where the Pacific Ocean collides with the Tasman Sea is a great photo opportunity to record your journey. At lunch time check out the surf at Taputaputa Bay. Try beach rugby, cricket and frisbee or simply relax and take in the beautiful scenery.
Learn some quick sand surfing techniques before grabbing a boogie board to surf down the massive sand dunes at the Te Paki Stream. An experience not to be missed!
Take in the emptiness of 90 Mile beach - a registered highway including a 100km/h speed limit. Smell the salt air and get some toe-digging tips from the local driver as you hunt for fresh shell fish on the beach (pipi picking).
End the day over looking the water at Mangonui eating New Zealand's World Famous 'fish 'n chips'.
