Departing from the Mount Maunganui base, this flight takes you over the sparkling waters of beautiful Mount Maunganui Beach, around Mauao - the sacred mountain at the mouth of the Tauranga Harbour - then through to the spectacular harbour itself, enjoying amazing views out to sea, over the vibrant Port of Tauranga and back to the airport.
Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, which means 'caught in the light of the day', was once a nameless mountain, spurned in love by the beautiful mountain Puwhenua. One night he begged the fairy-like creatures of the forest to drag him to the ocean and end his misery. But the creatures fled as the morning sun's rays struck, and he was transfixed on the spot.
Mount Maunganui is an extinct volcanoe cone and is 'Tapu', sacred to the local Maori 'iwi', people.
The legend is magical, and so is this short but sweet, 6 minute duration, flight which will stay carved in your memory forever!
