The Whareama Coastal Walk is one of New Zealand's newest, most versatile, privately run 2-night / 2-day, fully catered walking experiences, over private farmland and isolated coastline. The walk has been designed with YOU in mind. It doesn't matter if you are a couple, in a group or a lone 'tramper', we can cater for you. Come and join like-minded people on this stimulating, breath-taking walk.

Starting at Whareama, situated near the stunning East Coast of the Wairarapa, between the popular beach resorts of Castlepoint and Riversdale, be one of the first to enjoy our truly rural and coastal experience. It takes less than 2 hours to drive here from Wellington or Palmerston North and 3 & half hours from the Hawkes Bay region.

About the Walk

The Whareama Coastal Walk is a 2-night / 2-day privately run, moderate walk for all age groups (over 4 yrs). The route takes you on a one-way loop track, so there's no bumping into other groups or re-tracing your steps. Your group walks unguided (with a map and written directions), at your own comfortable pace, following distincitve markers over the Wairarapa countryside and coastline.

Use this Walk to spend quality time with family, friends, work colleagues, associates or like-minded trampers. Our Walk Season runs from 1st October to 30th April and we operate walks over Christmas and New Year!

You will be walking on farm tracks, laneways or following fencelines on a one-way well marked circular track over the Wairarapa countryside. Accommodated overnight in comfortable clean cottages, where your delicious, healthy, hearty meals await.

Meals and Acccomodation

The walk is fully catered. We use as much locally sourced fresh produce as we can to give you delicious meals. We provide you with all the provisions for a continental breakfast, picnic lunch, afternoon tea and an evening meal with dessert.

Your evening meal is delivered to your accommodation shortly before your arrival and will require very minimal input from your group before you can enjoy it! For example, you may need to BBQ the meat or heat a dish in the oven.

Our cottages Golden Downs Cottage and Wai Ngaio Retreat both have everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Please make yourselves at home and enjoy the quiet, peaceful atmosphere they have to offer. Golden Downs Cottage has 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathroom facilities and Wai Ngaio has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathroom facilities. Both cottages offer:

  • Wood Burner
  • BBQ
  • Fully equipped kitchen (incl tea-towels, coffee plunger, wine glasses etc)
