Outdoor magazine rated this river among the top 10 multi-day rafting rivers in the world. The Karamea National park is well known all over the world for its great trout fishing and big volume rapids. This area is a must do if you are after one of the classics.
There are no roads leading into this river so the only access is by helicopter or via the incredible Leslie track.
3 DAY HELI-RAFTING JOURNEY Grade: IV - V Duration: 3 Days We fly into the headwaters of the mighty Karamea River and spend the next 3 days rafting back out. The trip starts with half a day of grade III pool drop style rafting leading into grade IV in the afternoon. We then set up camp at the bottom of the "Earthquake Lake" (caused when a massive landslide fell into the valley causing a 2.5 kilometer lake to form) directly above the "Roaring Lion Rapids", grade V - VI depending on river flows.
We spend the evenings by the campfire having some wine or beer, or catching some giants in this world class fishing river. This area offers some of the best trophy fishing in the world with the average size of trout being in the 9 lb. area.
Price $1500 per person. Minimum of 4 people.
1 DAY HELI-RAFTING JOURNEY Grade: IV - V Duration: 8 Hours We fly into the lower section of the Karamea and spend 5 hours rafting through this exciting terrain, back to the coast. The waters on this trip are amazing and recognized by Outdoor magazine as an all-time classic.
Price $400 per person. Minimum of 4 people.
