Step back in time and explore the home of one of Northland's most prominent historical figures - James Reddy Clendon, a trader, witness to the Treaty of Waitangi, Magistrate and New Zealand's first US Consul. Crammed with historic treasures belonging to the Clendon family, Clendon House is a heritage goldmine. Clendon House is one of the historic treasures of the Hokianga, situated in Clendon Esplanade in the heart of the town, commanding a fine view of the harbour.

History

Clendon House, unpretentious in design, displays the dignity of a house suited to Captain James Reddy Clendon's high public position.

The house - completed in 1869 - is rectangular, with a high pitched roof and central dormer gable. The lower storey has a recessed porch with four simple porch posts and rooms on either end.

Captain Clendon was in the thick of the earliest Maori and Pakeha interaction. He was a witness to New Zealand's Declaration of Independence in 1835, the first United States Consul in 1838, a witness to the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 and a member of the first Legislative Council.

The house remained in the possession of the Clendon family till 1972 when it and the contents were purchased by the NZHPT for visitors to relive a fascinating part of New Zealand history.

Hear stories about early life in the Hokianga - one of New Zealand's oldest bicultural communities - including the moving story of how James Clendon's young widow Jane worked hard to pay off a mountain of debt in order to keep Clendon House in the family, and indirectly play an important role in preserving this stunning piece of early New Zealand heritage.
