Hanmer Springs, just an hour and a half from Christchurch, with it's thermal hot springs and breathtaking alpine scenery, is home to Hanmer Horses. Hanmer Horses offers you the chance to explore the spectacular surrounding countryside and Hanmer Forest Park on horseback. Cross clear mountain streams and take in views that will blow you away! Bring your camera and an apple for your horse!
Hanmer Horses is open daily, all year round, guaranteeing you a quality experience you will never forget. And of course after a long day in the saddle you can go and ease away the aches and pains in the thermal baths!
Our quality horses range in sizes, abilities and types. We mainly have Clyde crosses and a few pure bred Arabs, Arab crosses, thorobreds, paints and pony crosses.
Experienced riders can have an exhilarating canter up on the farm hills and beginers a gentle ride which will teach you control of your horse and even trotting on your first ride.
Although trekking will take priority, you are able to hire a pony and lead walk your children around the farm! Have a wee one mad on horses? This is a great way to start a possible life long passion!
Treks Available
The 1 hour treks leave at 11am, 1pm & 3pm
This trek covers a range of hillside and woodland scenery and is available for 1 person up to a maximum or 6 or 7 per trek leader. The 1 hour trek cost is NZ$45 and bookings are essential.
The 2.5 hour treks leave at 11am or 1pm
Again, woodland and hillside scenery plus river crossings and optional canter stretch makes the 2.5 hour trek exciting! The 2.5 hour trek requires a minimum of 2 or more persons booked and a maximum of 6-7 persons per trek leader. Booking is essential. NZ$90 per person.
30 minute Pony hire for children aged under 10 at the parents discretion (you lead!) Hiring a pony for leading costs NZ$20 per pony. Make sure children are appropriately dressed and they will be required to wear helmets.
Discounts available for groups, families and students (proof required, direct booking only). Trek times may vary, due to local circumstances.
To make a booking we need the following details:
-Date and time/type or ride
-Number of people
-Ages of children
-Everyone’s riding capabilities
-If anyone is tall or heavy (100kg weight limit)
-Your creditcard details to secure the ride - pay as you like on the day
How to find us
Our farm is situated in a beautiful setting at the edge of the forest in the Rogerson Valley. All the facilities are purpose made, giving our horses a lovely new home just a 15 minute drive from the Thermal Pools. Rogerson Rd is a single lane gravel track with two shallow fords and a bridge over the Rogerson River. Please drive carefully as other people and horses could be on the road
