Welcome to Haast River Safaris. Take a river boat journey through the mighty Haast River Valley into the heart of Te Wahipounamu - the South West World Heritage Area and experience a close-up encounter with this spectacular untouched landscape and its remarkable natural features. Be treated to a real kiwi experience on board one of the 4 purpose-built, fully enclosed safari boats. All our guides have a genuine love of the area and this is reflected in the personalised and informative tour they provide.
Travel on one of our purpose built fully enclosed river boats with front-loading access. Great visibility is ensured, yet you remain warm, dry and comfortable, making this a unique and safe experience suitable for anyone of any age to participate in and enjoy.
While the scenic value is terrific on a sunny day, the valley is equally awesome during rain with mist shrouding the forest, waterfalls in full flow and light reflecting the multiple shades of green present in the native bush backdrop.
Learn from our local & highly experienced driver/guides about the physical attributes of this remarkable glacial valley, where temperate rainforest thrives.
Hear stories of true Kiwi spirit that enabled a community to survive on the edge of the wilderness in this rugged landscape that is truly one of New Zealand's last frontiers.
Coach groups are welcome and Haast River Safari offers a one hour return trip or a unique one-way river trip option on the route between Glacier Country and the Southern Lakes Region. Passengers are dropped off by coach either at the Haast Bridge or the Roaring Billy Falls - both points are adjacent to State Highway 6 - and picked up at the other end, depending on the direction the group is travelling in.
Return trips from the Haast Bridge are scheduled at 9am & 2pm daily.
Those taking this Safari option spend 90 minutes exploring the Haast River Valley, small group sizes allow this trip to suit the particular interests of those on board and the leisurely pace leaves ample time for interaction with your guide.
The morning departure is a great option for those who have spent the previous night in the Haast Area; while the afternoon trip leaves ample time for those travelling on either to the Glaciers or Wanaka/Queenstown.
