The rugged West Coast is hemmed between the Tasman Sea and the imposing Southern Alps, making for spectacular contrasts in the surrounding scenery. Franz Josef Glacier, found in the stunning Westland National Park, is one of the most spectacular glaciers in this region. Combine an awesome scenic helicopter flight over the glacier with a unique guided walk amongst the ice caves, pinnacles and seracs of this pristine, alpine environment. You'll see the extraordinary colors of the ice-flow from above and then up close, on an unforgettable guided walk. After the scenic helicopter flight over all three icefalls of the Franz Josef Glacier, you will land high up on the glacier between two icefalls to undertake the two hour guided hike. Your guide will be 'free guiding', selecting a route as you go and looking for the most spectacular ice formations to show you. Learn about glacier processes and enjoy the supreme panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding mountains. After completion of the glacier hike, the guide radios for the helicopter to return and take you back to the township of Franz Josef. This two hour walking adventure is suitable for people of average fitness.
With its ability to hover, land and provide access to some of the most remote areas, the helicopter is the ideal choice for sightseeing that will take you right up close to towering peaks, crevasse filled glaciers and sparkling waterways.
