Taieri Gorge Railway

Rail Tour - Dunedin - Railway Station
Price: Starting from NZ $89.00 per adult

A highlight of your visit to Dunedin is a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway - one of the world's great train trips and one of Dunedin's top attractions. Departing daily from downtown Dunedin into the Taieri Gorge, this trip travels through some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery which can not seen from the road! Marvel as the train negotiates this narrow and exhilarating river gorge and awesome landscapes. The trip includes a commentary, sightseeing stops, viewing platforms throughout the train and has a café aboard.

The Journey

The trip is good in ALL weather. In fact its one Dunedin's best 'all weather trips'. We have heaters in each carriage for when the weather is cool.

Most of our carriages are the heritage carriages built 1915-1920s. These are fully restored and have padded comfortable seats, most of which flip over to face the direction of travel. They are warm and full of character. We also have a snack bar carriage which sells a range of cafe style food.

You can make the return journey to Pukerangi, or Middlemarch, or use the train to take you to the foot of the Otago Central Rail Trail, a 150km journey by foot or bicycle, through some of the country's most memorable scenery.

As well as our normal service...
  • Board or depart the train closer to Dunedin Airport
  • Extra morning trips and special catering can be arranged on request
Otago Rail Trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail is a year-round recreational facility, designed for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. It is a public reserve and can be walked or ridden in either direction.

The Trail follows the old Central Otago branch railway line from Middlemarch to Clyde. The Taieri Gorge Railway is the ideal way to access the rail trail.

Track and Trail - Queenstown and Wanaka

If you are looking at travelling onto Queenstown or Wanaka (or vice versa) then the Track and Trail tour may be just the trip! There is a daily connecting tour between Dunedin and Queenstown/ Wanaka using the Taieri Gorge Railway and an Alpine Connections Coach. This "off the beaten track" tour is perfect to use as an alternative route between these two spectacular destinations.
