The Dunedin Literary Walk is inspired by the writers' names on the pavement plaques of the Octagon Writers' Walk. Each of these writers has either lived in Dunedin or continues to live here. All have something to say about Dunedin - its history, the climate, our lifestyle.
During this easy two-hour stroll the words of these Dunedin writers are brought to life, illustrating the city's rich history from the 1860s to the 21st century. There's plenty here for all ages, from school children on, and for all interests, from rugby to literature, from music to local government.
Your principal tour guide and creator of the Dunedin Literary Walk is Dr Jennie Coleman, an experienced educator, engaging story-teller and professional researcher. She weaves the words of Dunedin writers through significant moments in Dunedin's extraordinary history, social, cultural, religious, economic, sporting, educational, political and theatrical.
"It was like experiencing time-travel ... you brought the characters of the past to life with the combination of quotes from their works and the sight of the places associated with them." - Bruce, Canberra.
"It gave me a great sense of connection to Dunedin - as if I have many friends there." - Alison, Melbourne.
This walk is an easy 2.5 Km stroll, carefully planned to accommodate most accessibility requirements. There are no steps, all street crossings are accessible and wheelchair users will be appropriately compensated for the one, short incline on the route. In unsuitable weather, a 'virtual' walk is available as a warm and comfortable alternative.
