Kia Ora, welcome to Milestone Tours' Bay of Islands Explorer.
These 150 islands are set in a natural harbour of clear azure water, named upon discovery by Capt. James Cook. Join us on a journey filled with real kiwi hospitality, breathtaking natural wonders and rich history.
The Tour
From Auckland, we travel north through picturesque townships and swaths of farmland, pausing in the young native bush beside the photogenic, diamond cascade of the Whangarei Falls.
In Kawakawa we 'comfort stop' at the extraordinary toilets (yes, toilets!) created by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Then it's onward to the seaside resort town of Paihia, and the crystal-blue waters of the Bay of Islands. Here, you can take your pick of these activities:
Option 1 - Waitangi Treaty Grounds: where modern New Zealand was born in 1840. This pre-eminent historical site features picturesque gardens, an intricately carved Maori meetinghouse, one of the world's largest Maori war canoes and the original Treaty House.
Option 2 - Cape Brett Cruise: This cruise weaves through the bay's stunning islands, and, weather permitting, through the dramatic Hole in the Rock, before we enter Grand Cathedral Cave.
We overnight in the beautiful, Northland town of Kerikeri, well known for its gourmet produce. Our second day begins with a visit to two of the country's oldest surviving settler buildings and the well-preserved Kororipo Pa (fort) site.
From Kerikeri, a stunning coastal road and short ferry crossing bring us to Russell, and its treasure trove of historical oddities and infamies: the source of Catholic missionaries' first printed texts, a Church still pockmarked by musket ball holes, the country's first licensed hotel, and the flagstaff felled four times by a Maori chief - even after the British had it encased in iron! Today's peaceful town belies its notorious past, nestled between a sparkling bay and a pristine white-sand swimming beach.
We journey south via the pretty Maori settlement of Waiomio. Here our Maori guide reveals the spectacular stalactite formations and extravagant glow-worm displays of the Kawiti Caves, before we set off for home.
