Step back in time and enjoy one of Auckland's most charming early cottages. Built for Rev Vicesimus Lush and his family in 1863-4, Ewelme Cottage is crammed with family belongings, and is largely unchanged from Victorian days - right down to its wall to wall drawing room carpet. Boasting a superb antique book collection and a fascinating array of family items spanning over a century, Ewelme Cottage is an unforgettable heritage experience.
History
Ewelme, after being extended 20 years after it was originally built, remained in family hands till 1968.
Its design is unusual in its layout - ground floor rooms laid out progressively along the axial length of the building, as with medieval British dwellings, rather than having a conventional front and back. This suggests it reflects a religious influence of the time that sought to combine aspects of medieval architecture into contemporary buildings.
Ewelme Cottage is of considerable importance for its well-preserved interiors and furnishings, and provides great value on colonial building materials and techniques.
It boasts close to 2000 books, hundreds of pages of sheet music, original artworks and a vast array of everyday objects from ointment pots to knitting needles.
Located a stone's throw from Parnell's boutique shops and cafes, Ewelme Cottage is the perfect place to visit, and lose all sense of time.
