The tour options all visit Pohatu Marine Reserve at a small coastal bay nestled between dramatic volcanic headlands on Banks Peninsula. Here you'll find the largest Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand with a spectacular scenic backdrop.

Penguin ToursTour the largest Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand.
Get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures. You are guaranteed to see penguins in their natural habitat during the breeding season from September to mid February and periodically over the months of April to August. Come along to learn interesting facts and help preserve these birds.
Scenic 4WD to Pohatu - $75 per person / $55 child under 15 years
pick-up at Akaroa with spectacular Scenic 4WD van ride to Pohatu with photo stop opportunities. Pet sheep will come running for treats. This tour concentrates mostly on the Little penguin but other native and endemic birds may also be seen. e.g the Yellow Eyed Penguins who breed at the bay. Tour length is approximately two and a half to three hours. Returns after dark.
Self Drive Tour - $25 per person / $12 child under 15 years
Join the tour at the bay. The road to Pohatu is a steep and narrow shingle road and recommended for 4WD vehicles only. If you have a suitable vehicle you may join the tour at Pohatu. Prebooking is essential.
2 hour Nature Tour - $65 per person / $35 child under 15 years
Great opportunity to see penguins and their chicks up close on their nests (Note, penguins are only seen in season). Guides often point out other native birds and wildlife as we go. Ideal for people on a day trip in Akaroa, giving you the time to also explore our historic town.Tour length is two hours departing at 11.00am (only available on cruise ship day) and 1.30pm (available everyday).
Sea KayakingExplore the marine reserve on a sea Kayak Tour.
Be prepared to be blown away on our sea kayak tour. Kayak around the outer coast of Pohatu Marine Reserve which homes divers wildlife with many marine species such as penguins, seal colonies, hector dolphins and many sea birds.
Experience is not necessary, trips are only run in settled safe conditions and fully guided by experienced guides. If the weather is unsuitable on the day a refund is offered or an opportunity to come on the Full Scenic Nature Safari to explore the same beautiful area.
All gear are provided, even dry bags for you camera. Note that a change of clothes is recommended.
Departing at 12.00pm - $90 per person / $65 child under 15 years
Includes pick-up at Akaroa with a spectacular Scenic 4WD safari to Pohatu with photo stop opportunities and guided sea-kayaking of Pohatu Marine Reserve.
Early bird kayaking - $75 per person / $65 child under 15 years
This option is a slightly faster paced tour and does not include the photo stops along the way and is open from the 1st of October to the 30th of April.
Bring yourself - $55 per person
This is for those who want to drive themselves. The road to Pohatu is a steep and narrow shingle road and recommended for 4WD vehicles only.

This 4 hour tour runs from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Includes: Scenic drive to Pohatu Marine Reserve with photo stops en route, penguin monitoring during penguin breeding season, walk through the beautiful Tutakakahikura Scenic Bush Reserve, Banks Peninsula Tree Weta, learning of lizard conservation, visit a working sheep farm, Scenic drive to Akaroa head reserve and lighthouse where you will appreciate the dramatic outer-coast of Banks Peninsula and its volcanic creation.
2 hour Nature tour - $65 per person / $35 child under 15 years
This is a great tour for anyone wanting a shorter option to explore the area. Includes: Scenic drive to Pohatu Marine Reserve with photo stops en route, penguin monitoring during penguin breeding season, visit a working sheep farm.
Pohatu PackageSpend a night in the middle of a Penguin Colony. 24 hour and 48 hour packages available.
The package enables you to enjoy all activities Pohatu has to offer and free time to explore or relax. Known as the Wildside of Banks Peninsula it is an area that commands more than just a brief visit.
Only $130 per adult and $80 per child. Group or family 4 or more $105 per person. The 48 hour option gives you a further 24 hours at Pohatu for just the accommodation price of $90 accommodation unit. This gives you more time to explore the many lovely tracks on the property, more time to get the best conditions for sea kayaking or to simply sit back and soak up the tranquil atmosphere.
