Welcome to Explore Canterbury. We offer you a special day trip from Christchurch with destination Akaroa. We are locally owned and operated and our prices start from only $65.
Explore Canterbury offers small tours of up to 8 people. We are totally committed to giving you good, personal, and friendly Kiwi service. Ours is a relaxed pace so no rushing and no early starts -there is time for you to breathe in and absorb your experience. We want you to have a unique holiday, one that you will always remember.
We offer small personal day tours to Akaroa because of its beautiful bays and harbour, French and English history, the opportunity to go sailing, and to see Hector's dolphins and other special wildlife on a harbour cruise.
You will start from your accommodation in Christchurch, climb the Port Hills to the Sign of the Takahe where you can look out across the Canterbury Plains to the mighty Southern Alps. From here we travel through Governors Bay at the end of Lyttelton harbour, across Gebbies Pass to meet the main road at Lake Ellesmere which, for the birdwatchers amongst you, is home to many different species of coastal birds. Further along the way is the historic and arty Little River township which is a most pleasurable stop. We stop again at Hilltop, this time on the rim of the Akaroa crater and where your breath will be taken away by the panoramic views across the harbour to Akaroa.
Akaroa itself is an old whaling township founded by the French in 1840. Today it still has a distinctly French flavour. You will have an enjoyable time exploring this lovely town and finding lunch to suit yourself from one of the many seaside cafes.
For the afternoon the choice is yours.
Either:
Take a Black Cat Cruise of the Harbour to see New Zealand’s unique Hector’s dolphins and other wildlife;
or
Have fun sailing around the harbour on a wonderful
‘A-class’ Keeler (sorry not suitable for children);
or
You may simply elect to explore and relax in this colourful seaside town.

For our cruise ship guests, We have specifically designed a sightseeing tour to Akaroa for guests with only a day to visit us. We depart from the Lyttelton Visitor Centre 9.00 - 10.00am, depending on your ship's arrival time.
On the way to Akaroa we pass through farmlands, visit arty Little River and stop at Hilltop for the breathtaking view down into Akaroa Harbour. In Akaroa you have time for lunch, to explore and, time and availability allowing, take a harbour cruise with the chance to see rare Hector's dolphins. We are happy to assist you with your booking. Your day ends with a complimentary glass of champagne to enjoy on the drive back to Lyttelton.
We return to the Lyttelton Visitor Centre with comfortable time allowed for you to board your ship again.
Our charter tours also concentrate on arranging a day trip for you to enjoy the beautiful attractions and activities found in the bays and headlands of Banks Peninsula. We will also take you on a days excursion anywhere in Canterbury. It is our pleasure to put something together just for your group.
