Join in the hostel MatakoheLimestone Island replanting project and help to restore the native plants and animals to this tranquil island.
What to do:
Whangarei is the base for diving expeditions to the Poor Knights Marine Reserve, (one of the top 10 dive sites of the world). Diving and snorkelling can be easily arranged. Enjoy the Mt Parahaki reserve bush walks and free night time glow-worm walks. Explore the Abbey caves network, the AH Reed Kauri Park and the Whangarei falls (rated the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand). The town basin has glass blowing, art galleries, museums, cafés, restaurants, swimming pools and is 30 minutes drive to some spectacular beaches and coastal scenery.
