Welcome to Thornton Beach Holiday Park in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. For Kiwi camping the way it used to be! Thornton Beach near Whakatane is a great destination for a fantastic New Zealand beach holiday with heaps of fun for the whole family. We have many campsites available and various types of accommodation to suit all needs and budgets.
Completely renovated in 2007 / 2008 we now have a brand new purpose built Ablution Block and this year addition include a playground, jumping pillow and bikes/games hire. We are currently 4 star PLUS Qualmark rated and are the winner of the 2008 SMART business Award as well as a finalist in the Spirit of Hospitality Award.
Enjoying the spectacular panoramic sea views and known for its great catch, Thornton Beach is a fisherman's haven. Land based anglers can fish towards Whale Island from the beach with a surfcasting rod and if you go out boating you won't be disappointed either! The boatramp is situated approx 200m from the Park entrance and launching is easy.
The views from our Holiday Park are spectacular. Whale Island is right in front of you and New Zealand's only live marine volcano White Island can be clearly seen in the distance. The ocean beach stretches out at your doorstep and the Rangitaiki River on the other side of our holiday park also offers great water sports opportunities. There is so much to do - from spectacular bushwalks to shopping in Whakatane or lazy beach days - we have it all.
Thornton Beach has heaps of space to build huge sand castles and offers safe swimming for the kids. The lagoon is excellent for the youngest campers and there are surf lifesavers keeping an eye out on the beach in the summer period. There are many great new facilities at Thornton Beach Holiday Park and there is a nice, relaxed atmosphere all around with lovely landscaped grounds.
We also care about our fragile environment and we are currently the only Holiday Park to be Green Globe benchmarked in the North Island.

If you enjoy camping, you'll love staying with us! There are so many great spots at Thornton Beach Holiday Park to set up your tent or park your motor home. Enjoy the spectacular views and wake up to the sound of the waves as the campsite is absolute beachfront.
Our brand new ablution block is nice, fresh, clean and very practical as it was built with families in mind. We have three family size showers here that will make it easy for parents to take their kids into the shower. Baby baths and a changing table are free for you to use.
We have high-speed Internet access & wireless hotspot, a communal kitchen with cooktops, microwaves, fridge/freezers, coin operated laundry facilities with washing machines, dryers and laundry tubs as well as a large undercover outdoor BBQ area with lots of room for Al fresco dining. Cook your 'Catch of the Day'!.
Over the summer holidays, we show children's movies at night, organizing beach activities and the Regional Surf Lifesaving guards on the beach in December and January. We will run 'Little Nippers Programs' during the holidays, and we have introduced an action packed Kids Summer Program. Great fun for the little ones and... it gives parents a well-deserved break.
Whakatane has one of the countries warmest climates with relatively mild winters and long hot summers. It is a popular holiday destination boasting some of the finest saltwater fishing in New Zealand, and to describe all the fun activities in the Whakatane district will take just about forever!
One of the great things about our holiday park is the unique location, offering a total holiday experience for the whole family. The long sandy beach, the sheltered picnic area and the playground right outside our gates are great for family fun. There are many rural, bush or river tracks to follow. You can take out a kayak, dinghy, jetski and have fun on the water or walk along the beach.
