If you are heading to the Glaciers from the North of the South Island you are passing our door! Birds Ferry Lodge offers luxury lodge accommodation on the Northern West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Located near Westport, midway between the North of the Island and the Glaciers, making it the perfect spot to break your journey.
The Birds Ferry Lodge is located on a 33 acre rural property, surrounded by native bush and Pakihi. Guests can enjoy a selection of short walks here and throughout the Buller area.The solid timber construction and the unique natural surroundings offer you peace and tranquillity.
Guest accommodation is luxurious and private, designed with your comfort in mind.Queen rooms have tea making facilities. We offer luxury bed and breakfast accommodation with the option of enjoying fine food and New Zealand wines at dinner, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Our breakfasts are legendary!
All food served at Birds Ferry Lodge is prepared from fresh, largely homegrown ingredients. Grass fed beef is sourced from a neighbouring farmer at Costello Hill. Locally caught crayfish and whitebait regularly features on the menu. Breakfast sausages and bacon are supplied by the famous Runanga Butcher -'Jones'. Mr Jones runs his butchers shop the old fashioned way - smoking their own bacon and salmon and making sausages and black pudding to a Scottish family recipe. Alison makes her own feta, cheddar and mascapone cheeses as well as using home grown fruit in jams and jellies for the breakfast table.
Ferry Man's Cottage offers luxurious holiday home accommodation, set in it's own private 12 acre section at the very end of Birds Ferry Road, forming part of our 33 acre property. It is the perfect spot for a romantic weekend away or a family holiday. Located on the edge of a small Lake, 2 km from the highway and, with native Wekas, Pukekos and wild ducks as neighbors this is a most peaceful spot. The rare Kiwi can be heard at night here.
The solid timber cottage is finished to a very high standard and designed to take in the panoramic mountain and ocean views - all the luxury touches of Birds Ferry Lodge but with a fully equipped kitchen in your own very private setting. Tariff includes gourmet breakfast hamper. If you don´t want to cook, we are happy to provide a Cottage Dinner. This is a two course, quality homestyle meal. We use locally sourced produce including our own fresh vegetables. The dinner is $45pp. When more that 2 guests order a cottage dinner this rate is reduced to $35pp.WIFI available.
The property is a perfect base for your adventure or walking activities around Charleston, Westport and Punakaiki. The semi remote, rural location means that the wildlife is in abundance. The native Weka visits the garden and at night the call of the Kiwi has been heard by guests from the Lodge. Wild deer have been spotted from the deck and whilst enjoying the spa after dark guests are kept company by our local Common owl who rests on the back of the chair right beside them! Tui and Bell birds visit the well stocked bird table.
