When you stay at The Gates Country Lodge, you can be assured of the true New Zealand experience. Your hosts are Jim and Wendy Harré, born and bred New Zealanders, who love North Canterbury with a passion.
It's a spectacular region that encompasses rich farmland, extensive vineyards, snow-capped mountains and broad rivers. It's also renowned for the thermal spa pools at Hanmer Springs and the coastal town of Kaikoura, where whale watching is a must.
The Gates Country Lodge takes full advantage of its stunning location, offering fine regional wines, fresh local produce and a full range of authentic experiences, including trout and salmon fishing, jet boating down the Waiau river and horse trekking in remote, undiscovered countryside.
Set among expansive lawns and established trees the original homestead dates from 1904. Contemporary architect David Brocherie redesigned the interior in 2000 to incorporate all the modern amenities while keeping it true to the Lodge's original character.
Today, the Lodge welcomes guests with the traditional comforts of open fireplaces, antique furniture, fine crystal and china, books, art and music. This is the ultimate place to relax and unwind among peaceful, comfortable surroundings.
Guest Suites and Facilities
Come and relax in the privacy and peace of this historic Lodge, set in 22 acres of grounds complete with swimming pool, croquet lawn and tennis court. Or make the most of the many activities we offer, tailored to suit your individual requirements.
Fresh garden flowers, crisp linens and elegant furnishings provide a traditional welcome in our three luxurious, centrally heated guest suites, all with their own private bathroom.
Each light-filled suite is named after one of the architects involved with the design of the Lodge, and is furnished with antique furniture, comfortable armchairs and original artworks. Sleep peacefully under down duvets and mohair blankets in a queen-size bed designed especially for the Lodge, using a firm, extra-sprung mattress and a soft, deep topping cushion.
All bathrooms have heated towel rails and mirrors, plenty of thick fluffy towels, cotton bathrobes and a fragrant selection of luxury toiletries.
Fresh Food
We pride ourselves on our seasonal menus, using locally-grown, organic produce wherever possible. Vegetables and herbs are hand-picked from our own gardens and everything is individually prepared to ensure maximum freshness and flavour. To start the day, choose from a full cooked breakfast or a range of cereals, yoghurt and fresh, seasonal fruit and juices.
The evening meal is a delicious three-course dinner which can be matched with wines from our well-stocked cellar. A variety of other alcoholic drinks is also available and all non-alcoholic drinks are complimentary, including, of course, the pure Alpine filtered water! Meals can be served in the dining room, with its fine china, silverware and crystal, or eaten al fresco on the terrace in fine weather - a great chance to make use of the wood-fired pizza oven.
Fine Wine
Your host Jim Harré is a well known international wine judge with in-depth knowledge of fine wines, and he's there to help match the best wines to your daily menu. Jim currently holds the position of Senior Judge with New Zealand Winegrowers and Chairman of Judges for the New World Wine Competition and is a Wine Consultant for Air New Zealand.
Wendy's great loves are old-fashioned roses, gardens, good fresh food and the renovation and decoration of houses. As well as managing The Gates Country Lodge and garden, Wendy works as a colour consultant.
Here at The Gates Country Lodge, we have our own private cellar, stocked with an eclectic collection of wines from around the world. Some of the finest come from the local Waipara Valley vineyards, situated just 45 minutes south of the Lodge.
Whatever you have in mind for your stay, you can always count on welcoming, friendly hospitality and the highest levels of service.
