Motueka River Lodge is world class accommodation for the discerning traveller, a small luxury hotel in a hidden valley with its's own enchanted forest. Designed to harmonize with the surrounding countryside, its sunlit verandas, large comfortable lounge, huge open fireplaces and spacious country kitchen offer guests relaxation in luxury, style and comfort.
The Lodge is set in 35 acres of the Motueka Valley bordering on the Motueka River with magnificent mountain views and was purpose built in 1990 and designed in the French provincial style. Homely guest rooms reflect the tranquillity of the surroundings and from the lodge's elegant, country style interior there are spectacular views in every direction.
A large terracotta tiled entry hall leads to the guest lounge - a generous space with dark timber beams, a massive fireplace, comfy sofas, corner window seats and access to a wisteria-clad verandah.
Overlooking fields of deer grazing against a forest backdrop, the lodge kitchen has a warm and welcoming farmhouse atmosphere. Benches overflow with bowls of fresh fruit and homemade bread, and the chef wears a path to the pantry filled with homemade preserves and stores.
Here at the Motueka River Lodge, we live in the perfect cooking environment, a kitchen full of guests most of the time (always a compliment), happily fulfilling individual food requirements, and as New Zealanders, we have to be the luckiest people in the world when it comes to fresh raw ingredients. It`s like having a dinner party every night, enriched by ever changing conversation and laughter as guests come and go.
Our cuisine is very seasonal, our seafood is exceptional, and we’re famous for our green lipped mussels. It is hard to feel as though you’re not bragging as you serve up a bowl full to a mussel loving guest.
The Motueka River Lodge is also the perfect spot for the dedicated fisherman. The Motueka River is fast developing a reputation as a brown trout fishery of international importance. Drift dive surveys confirm the fact that the river has one of the highest per kilometre fish counts in New Zealand.
Undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of the Motueka River Lodge is the Karamea and its important tributaries the Crow and Roaring Lion. Rapidly gaining a reputation worldwide, the Karamea continues to produce outstanding brown trout of prodigious size. For practical purposes accessible only by helicopter, these wilderness streams are closer to Motueka River Lodge and at a cheaper rate than any other Lodge in the Nelson/West Coast area. Mountain View Helicopters are located only minutes away from the Lodge by air. Sharing the cost of helicopter and guide with one or two other persons makes a day in the Karamea an affordable taste of ultimate in fly fishing. In good conditions scores of trout averaging a shade under 6 lb will be encountered. Create a taste of angling paradise. For those not interested in the gentle art of fly fishing, the Motueka area has plenty of other interests, some strenuous some not so strenuous….such as hiking and bush walks in and about the famous Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks, white water rafting, golf, bird watching, tennis, lying around on our beautiful beaches or you can go horse trekking with experienced guides.
Many internationally recognised artists, weavers and potters live in the area attracted by the beautiful climate and variety of scenery, and a visit to their studios is well worth while.
Nearby Nelson culture boasts a vibrant art and crafts scene and a great collection of wine and beermakers. There are parks and gardens and historic places to explore. And there are the locals to meet: people who seem particularly good at reflecting the sunny lifestyle they enjoy.
Since being built, The Motueka River Lodge has received many accolades. "The London Sunday Times" named it as one of the seven best places in the world to stay. The Lodge has also earned an entry in "Courvoisier’s Book of the Best" covering the finest accommodation and places to visit in over 60 countries.
Your hosts, have created a peaceful haven and he will personally ensure that your stay at the Motueka River Lodge will be a memorable one.
