Awatuna Homestead, near Hokitika on the West Coast of the Southern Alps (Te Tai O Poutini), is an elegant coastal retreat situated between Greymouth and Hokitika, offering peace and privacy amidst a spectacular setting of unspoiled native bush and lush gardens. It is really an escape to an untouched world where you can relax amidst a peaceful setting yet with a touch of homely elegance.
Your hosts, the Te Räkau family - Pauline, Hëmi, Eleanor and Peter - will provide a hospitality that is in keeping with the best and truest Awatuna traditions.
Set in a valley that stretches from the foothills of the Southern Alps to the Tasman Sea, the Homestead enjoys the peace and quiet of country lodge accommodation whilst being only 10 minutes from the modern convenience and facilities of Hokitika.
Built in 1996 on the same site as their former home, the double storey timber lodge-style Homestead reflects many features of that beautiful building.
The architectural design preserves the classic country colonial lines of dormer windows.
Wide verandahs embrace the Homestead, inviting you to pause and sit in comfort, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the gardens featuring native plants, a traditional paa harakeke (cultural flax garden), mature exotic trees and shrubs.
Close by the Homestead is the natural splendour and excitement of a wild West Coast beach with stunning views of the mountains and the sea. Watch the unbelievable beauty of the sun setting into the ocean at day's end.
Classic country cooking, featuring vegetables and herbs, when in season, from the Homestead gardens, are produced in the traditional farm-house style kitchen. Free-range chickens provide farm-fresh eggs every day to complement the hearty breakfasts, and dinner is by prior arrangement.
Facilities
Guest Rooms:
The three guest rooms are named after local townships and places which were notable features of the Waimea Goldfields of the 1860s. The rooms all have their own distinctive character, as well as their own unique views. All rooms have central heating and ensuites. The Goldsborough Room has a super king bed or twin beds and spa bath.
Guest Apartment:
This is a self contained, centrally heated apartment within the Homestead complex, with its own private access. It features a queen room, a twin room with king single and single bed, one private bathroom, lounge with comfortable double sofa bed, self-catering kitchen and exclusive exterior deck with sea views. Apartment guests are offered the same activities as guests in the Homestead.

Fossick on the beach for interesting driftwood and semi-precious stones and if you are blessed, maybe a small piece of pounamu (greenstone).
Or simply sit on the beach and watch the sun fall into the arms of the sea.
