Haurata Retreat, 60 kms from Gisborne, is a four bedroom farmhouse set amidst 7 hectares of park like grounds planted with over 600 rhododendrons. Relax in the tranquil landscaped surroundings at Haurata. Great for a family getaway, a romantic escape, or the overseas traveller wanting to experience a New Zealand high country setting.
Breathe the clean mountain air, drink the pure spring water and discover the pleasures of living in the remote hills of Gisborne.
Situated between Gisborne and Opotiki, approximately 60km from Gisborne city and about 24km from Matawai village, Haurata is located on the Makaretu road (gravel) 12.5km off State Highway 2.
The retreat is sheltered from most winds and a haven for children to roam and play. Go for leisure walks, explore the river, find safe swimming holes for younger children and more challenging ones for grownups. Hurtle down rock slides , build huts , play in the trees and follow the tracks through the native bush. Enjoy swimming and eeling in the mountain river and goat hunting on the land.
Take advantages of the surrounding gardens including picking organic fruit from the trees in season.
Walks
Enjoy the freedom of exploring 1000 Ha (2400 acres) of fascinating high country, and enjoy the experience of a working High Country farm. There are a number of recommended walks from Haurata, through spectacular scenery and countryside, and the Retreat is 'home base' - no need to carry luggage, just a day pack. The terrain is very much big hill country making walks reasonably challenging therefore the fitness level needs to be good.
After a long day's walking through our wonderful countryside, relax in our gas heated hot tub - absolute bliss!

• One king bed, one double bed and a twin bedroom in the house + a double bed off annex

• A bath and vanity with a separate toilet, + Shower room with hand basin and toilet.
• Fully equipped kitchen, microwave, fridge/freezer and electric stove.
• Pantry supplied with the basics
• Free-view T.V, video and small stereo
• Washing Machine, Dryer and Iron
• Free standing fire with plenty of wood available
• Large deck for sunbathing and a BBQ (gas bottle included)
• Large outdoor table (9 chairs) and 2 sun lounges.
• Lots of space available for tents
Food
Food is supplied for walking groups, this includes:- continental and cook breakfast + food supplied for making own lunches. Two-course evening meals all dishes are home-made with most produce from the region and my garden.
Alcohol BYO. Food can be arranged if required for other guests but it must be organised well prior to visit.
