Welcome to Mahitahi Lodge, a luxury West Coast Bed and Breakfast.
John and Jacqui welcome you to their purpose built lodge offering high quality bed and breakfast accommodation in South Westland, the Gateway to the Glaciers.
Once you have arrived, there is no need travel far - all is here - and a wonderful dinner is served. The lodge is a marvelous place to unwind and simply relax, with a five minute walk to the Mahitahi River and the isolated, uncrowded and rugged Bruce Bay beach with views to Mt Cook.
Location
Mahitahi Lodge is ideally located for the quiet enjoyment of wonderful South Westland - 30 minutes (47 kilometres) south of Fox Glacier, 50 minutes south of Franz Josef Glacier, 3 hours north of Wanaka and 50 minutes north of Haast.
The Lodge
Your hosts pride themselves on making their guests feel 'at home'. The lodge features many of the West Coast's native timbers within its architecture and furniture, ensuring a very warm and welcoming place to stay. You are invited to join your hosts at their table specially crafted for them from native West Coast Matai timber.
To ensure an intimate atmosphere at the lodge, guests are treated like extended family. You will delight in Jacqui's home cooking and can relax in front of a big open fire - the feature of the lodge's open plan kitchen and lounge.
Guest Accommodation
Choose from three ensuite bedrooms - one is a fully self contained unit which is suitable for families or for those who wish to self cater.
Enjoy our generous home-cooked and/or continental breakfast and we offer a delightful dinner featuring fresh seasonal home-grown vegetables.
Free wireless internet access and telephone calls for ongoing bookings.
When time permits, join John's local interpretation tour of the environment, culture and history of Bruce Bay.
Local Activities
Enjoy beach and bush walks through beautiful native forest. Visit Fox and/or Franz Josef Glaciers where you can walk to the glacier, or take a helicopter flight. Guided treks on the ice are also available. Take our kayaks and paddle the 'golden mile', a sedate and beautiful stream running through the rain forest. Try a spot of fishing, take photographs or just enjoy the ambience and views from this secluded spot.
Come and fish for the huge Brown trout which run in October. In Spring, catch your own whitebait (a New Zealand delicacy). Go with your host and catch your own breakfast of this famous West Coast delicacy.
