Set among flower gardens, Dorset House is steeped in the character of early Christchurch pioneers. It was built in 1871 as home for the wealthy timber merchant, J B Way, and once featured 27 rooms and Italian marble fireplaces. It is a slice of Christchurch's past that we are proud to share.

Our guest rooms are comfortable, freshly cleaned, and bathed in afternoon sun. All rooms are within 3-7 metres of a bathroom. Fantastic value up-market backpacker hostel facilities at budget prices.

Extra blankets and electric blankets are fitted to keep you warm in the colder months. We have a sunny, spotlessly clean kitchen available for guest use (why not relax on the balcony and take advantage of our free WiFi access) and there's a full laundry here too. Free WiFi internet is available in the lounge and kitchen. Late check in is easily arranged.
The Lounge
The Lounge, otherwise known as the 'Old Ballroom', is a very large room with plenty of comfortable couches and is a great space for relaxing and talking. Guest facilities in the lounge include a free pool table, various board games and jigsaws, TV, DVD player (a selection of DVDs are available), cable TV access (great for early morning sports on ESPN), a variety of books for exchange and a stereo.
Facilities
Free WiFi internet is available for use in the public areas of the hostel, if you have your own laptop or iphone. For those who are travelling light, there are computers for guest use - offering internet access, word processing, spreadsheets, printing, Skype, USB ports and CD burning functions at a very low rate.
Dorset House offers a full travel and information desk - just ask at reception and let us organise your tours, day trips and onward travel. There's no charge for this, and if you're not sure where to go or what to do, ask our staff - they're locals and can clue you in on some hidden gems.
Centrally Located
- 30 seconds walk to leafy, green Hagley Park
- 8 minutes walk along the park to the Canterbury Museum & Botanic Gardens
- 3 minutes walk to the Christchurch Festival and Events Village
- There's a great pizza restaurant and an Indian Curry restaurant at the end of our street (1 minute walk)
Quirky shops on Victoria St - Vic's Cafe is famous (have an iced chocolate!) and we can see it from our front door- Also close to the Merivale and Riccarton shopping and restaurant areas (supermarkets, restaurants, bars, pubs)
Getting Here
- The Airport bus is a 2 minute walk away
- Public buses will take you all over the city
- Intercity bus depot is nearby (7 minute walk) for your national bus connections
Our staff will be pleased to help with your travel questions. Christchurch is recovering and there's still plenty to do in the Garden City.
Late check-ins can be organised, and free luggage storage is available. We have a custom-built lock-up to keep your bike or skis safe, and free off-street car parking is available behind the House.
